The Mating Game Is Changing —And You Won't Believe How

"Why do people seem to not want to commit anymore? Is romance dead? Is it that there is to much choice, always looking for the next thrill, the next hit of excitement, the next instant gratification, so never to be content." - Susan

The Mating Game Is Changing —And You Won't Believe How

For better? For worse? It depends on what you want.

Yes, the matting game is changing. Dating is on the ropes. But more, the whole mating repertoire is shifting. Coyness is, well, not quite a crime (thank you, Andrew Marvell), but not a fashionable feint either, and certainly not an inherent attribute of females. And no, this has nothing to do with the Internet. It has to do with numbers. It turns out that they have changed a whole lot more than you might suspected, and probably without your awareness.
The way people match up varies according to how many partners they sense are available—no surprise there. And the number of men, and especially quality men, is declining relative to the number of women, especially for those of college age, when people are primed for pairing off, in the moment and as they march through post-college life. You’ve seen the headlines: Men are falling behind women by almost every measure there is—school completion rates, number of graduate degrees, labor force participation. It especially matters at college, where men and women are housed together in a more or less closed community. For every 60 women now at college, there are 40 men—that's 50 percent more women than men.
The gender ratio tends to be closer to 50-50 at highly selective schools—with an excess of applicants they can draw deeper into the pool to balance their classes. The gender mismatch at such schools is not one of numbers but, at some point, of quality. Complaints of college women that men “act like they’re in high school” or “don’t have it together” are not sour grapes or losers’ laments; they reflect a true and growing reality.
But what isn’t at all obvious is that the very desire to pair off—and especially on what terms—changes radically as one's number of possible mates changes, and in ways that are extremely counterintuitive. The surprise is that men are more apt to be single when men are rare than when men are abundant. They’re surrounded by potential partners but have little interest in committing to or marrying them.
When males are abundant (China, take note), on the other hand, they are especially eager to put considerable effort into finding a mate and settling down; marriage rates go up and crime rates go down. Conventional wisdom  would have us believe all that testosterone on the loose would lead to mayhem, including lots of promiscuity and maybe rampant violence—you know, rape, pillage, and plunder.
Not so.
It’s when males are in short supply that men turn promiscuous and spawn babies out of wedlock, and male violence rages: Male-male homicide rates go up; so do sexual assault rates. Men muster little energy for finding a mate and, preferring casual sex, happily engage in multiple relationships, University of Utah anthropologist Ryan Schacht reports in a recent issue of Royal Society Open Science.
Schacht studied a homogenous population in southwestern Guyana whose members, in search of work, moved to several geographically dispersed communities that consequently varied naturally in gender composition. There, he observed, the sex roles and mating efforts of men and women were not tethered to biology but instead varied significantly depending on numbers of the opposite sex. Mating dynamics are mating dynamics, and the same dynamics, Schacht says, likely apply on college campuses—and in other populations where males are in short supply, such as older adult communities.
The findings, Schacht reports, “reject simplistic labeling of reproductive roles by gender based on inherent sex differences.” In fact, there’s evidence from many studies that testosterone levels—which prime males for mating competition, or something—vary tremendously based on situational factors. They dip significantly, for example, among new fathers.
Women  are not destined to be coy or passive in the mating game. When they are the more numerous sex, they engage in sometimes fierce competition among themselves for the few available mates. Exhibit A might be Schacht’s home base, Utah, dominated by the Mormon Church. Such is the nature of Mormonism that men are apt to leave it while women are more likely to convert to it, and stay Mormon. That gives the community a strongly female-heavy sex ratio. It also gives Utah a wildly disproportionate rate of plastic surgery procedures—with higher rates of breast implants, nose jobs, all kinds of facial surgery, and Botox injections, even among college students.
It’s not that Utahans are vain, as Forbes magazine has claimed: They’re lonely. And they want a romantic partner. So do women outside Utah—say, in colleges across America—and to have one, they may feel compelled to behave in ways they are not entirely comfortable with, such as hooking up.

Fish2FishDating.co.uk
This is what I found when I interviewed young women for a recent article, Crisis U, on the declining mental health of college students. Relationships were the leading cause of distress, and women were especially distressed over breakups, typically due to “commitment issues” among men. Further, at least some of what is being reported as rape stems from regret over drink-fueled encounters devoid of emotional connection.
The distress also makes its presence felt in my email inbox. As Psychology Today’s advice columnist, I increasingly hear from young women who are dissatisfied with relationships that don’t even qualify as relationships. They meet a guy, he calls every couple of months, they spend a night or two together each time, and then they’re miserable because they’re emotionally attached to him and want more from him—for which he might even call them "needy" or "greedy," should they summon the courage to ask.
It was in trying to understand this growing phenomenon that I turned to the literature for insight and discovered Schacht’s work. One of the novelties of his approach is to factor into research on mating what economists have known all along—that mating functions like a market in some ways, in response to the supply and demand of partners. Once he did, he found that those variations also change psychology.
“Relationship preferences and sexual behaviour of individuals are responsive to context,” Schacht says. “Men want fundamentally different things from relationships when males are rare than when they are abundant. The rare-male male is the stereotypical fling-seeking cad we expect him to be. However, the abundant-male male is the committed, devoted male from the age of Camelot.”
For the generation now coming of age—and for successive ones as long as males continue to fall behind—the dearth of good men at an important life juncture has repercussions for mental health. To name just one, success at dating and mating affects self-esteem.
With our egocentric bias, we think that everything in our life happens because of us individually, due to one characteristic or another, and, when we don’t get what we want, a characteristic that is in some way flawed. We probably seriously underestimate how much factors having nothing to do with us, but everything to do with our environment, including demographics, affect the shape of our lives.

5 REASONS NICE GUYS DATE AWFUL WOMEN

"Just like some females are attracted to the bad boy, some men like to chase the bitch. Maybe its because they think that the bitchiness or bossiness will carry on into the bedroom, maybe they like a strong woman who will tell them what to do. Alternatively it could be that they are attracted to their self-confidence and do not feel intimidated by them, they like the excitement that comes with somebody who is not predictable. Or perhaps its because they want what they can't have."       - Susan

5 REASONS NICE GUYS DATE AWFUL WOMEN

Are you attracted to high-maintenance women?

Ever been trapped in this scenario? Maybe you were on a plane. Maybe you were in a restaurant—wherever you were, you couldn’t help but overhear the conversation of a couple seated in close proximity. The woman spewed a seemingly unending list of demands, complaints, invectives and put-downs, while her paramour looked on helplessly. Perhaps out of sympathy (but more likely, self-preservation), your hand crept to your lap, shielding your own tender jewels from the ball-consuming fury spewing forth like a radioactive cloud. All you could do was silently scream, “Run, you fool! Get the hell out of there before that evil succubus (read: bitch) eats you alive!”

These days, “bitch” is a term that’s bandied about with fair frequency, even outside the AKC. It's even become a point of pride for select women hoping to becoming a better seductress. For many in modern culture, it’s cool to be cruel.

On the other hand, if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and acts like a bitch…well, you know the rest. We're sure that at least one of your buddies (or maybe even you) is dating one. If you’ve ever wondered why your pal’s voluntarily surrendered his man card and settled in for the long slow ride to the Land of the Cojones Perdidos, read on.

THE “HARD TO GET” FACTOR

Just as Groucho Marx famously said, “I don’t care to belong to any club that will have me as a member,” men famously do not want what they can have with ease, especially women. (Can you imagine if men selected fruit using the same criteria? Durian sales would go through the roof.) Because bitches are often aloof emotionally, although not necessarily physically, they become the giant stuffed unicorn at the sideshow ring-toss game. Even when the action’s fixed, winning the prize becomes an obsession, and guys keep on playing, long past the point of reasonable expenditure.

COMMITMENT CHALLENGED
Certain males are drawn to bitches because romantic relationships with built-in self-destruct cycles secretly appeal to them. According to Dr. Patti Britton, Ph.D., MPH, ACSE, ABS, ACS, FAACS, and co-founder of SEX COACH U, “Some commitment phobic men really do not like to commit. We see it a lot with clients who are in courtship mode. Then some show up married after time has passed, and they’ve tried to fake it—faked being real, faked finding love, faked trying keeping lust alive—and discovering after all that, something is missing.”

Britton ascribes some of the reasons for this self-defeating behaviour to a lack of social skills, fear of authentic intimacy and lack of positive role models for intimacy in a man’s family of origin. But whatever the catalyst, hitching your wagon to a bitch guarantees you’ll be hitting the end of the trail sooner rather than later

TOO MUCH MEDIA

Is This You

In a world that glamorises the likes of the Kardashians and so-called “real” housewives to the status of sex symbols, it’s no wonder guys are confused. While a pro-porn clinician and feminist, Dr. Britton sees a disturbing tendency in some younger men to regard media and porn examples as “real relationships on display,” when in truth, they are not real relationships at all.

“Young men who are isolated and alone think that this is how real women behave, and that this is how real intimate relationships may be formed,” she explains, especially with regard to porn. “Without the social and developmental steps they need to meet girls, find out how girls relate, and discover real means for communication, watching porn as a replacement for real relating to the opposite sex can be damaging and lead to the formation of toxic inauthentic relationships … In porn, women who like sex are ‘hungry bitches’ who act horribly toward men. So, this may become a real expectation for immature men thinking that’s how they will get sex. Sad, but true.”

She adds, the brave new world of “cyber-everything” has only exacerbated the problem, citing that what may “feel” or “appear” to be real relationships—even friendships, such as your Facebook friends—are built on pseudo-intimacy. “Many men spend far too many hours alone watching media, being isolated, lacking social and sexual development skills,” she notes, “and as a result, form false expectations for relationships. When they attempt to find a ‘real woman,’ they look in the wrong places for the ‘bad girl,’ who turns out to be a disaster—nasty and toxic.” (Or Kardashian…

OEDIPUS WRECKS

It’s “Mommy” issues. Men (and women) who grow up in dysfunctional families are often doomed to recreate negative behaviours in an attempt to heal the deep-seated hurt that arises from neglect, indifference, or worst-case scenario, abuse. All children deserve to be loved, however, some sperm and egg donors are not capable of imparting that emotion—and yet, they reproduce. The result is often offspring who grow up looking for approval that they are never going to find. Our advice? Seek therapy, and do not procreate with a bitch, lest you consign your children to the same fate.

IT’S THE SEX, DUMMY

Like their AKC counterparts, some bitches just want to get laid, and when they’re in heat, emotional collateral damage is the last thing on their minds. If she can suck the whitewall off a tire, has a nymphomanical appetite, and the sexual stamina of a warren of Energizer Bunnies, your pal (or you) may be so come-addled, he doesn’t give a damn that his woman’s a bitch. The bad news: his balls may soon go the way of the dodo. The good news: at least they won’t be blue

Boomers With Benefits: A Free Love Revolution With No Rings Attached

"To anybody who wants this sort of arangement to work, guidelines and boundaries
must be set and adhered too".            - Susan

Boomers With Benefits: A Free Love Revolution With No Rings Attached

Anne Hunter has a deep and committed relationship with her long-term partner of 22 years, Peter Haydon, who lives down by the coast with his other partner.

Yes, you read that right.

"Several of the people I spoke to said they were having the best sex of their lives."
Dr Linda Kirkman
Hunter, 52, used to have another long-term partner, but they are now just close friends.

Anne Hunter.

She also has about six or seven "intimates" like James Dominguez; friends of all genders she might have sex with, or just "jump into bed naked together and cuddle".

Some she sees rarely, others live nearby and they catch up often.

But when Hunter fills in her relationship status on forms she describes herself as single.

A qualified counsellor, she lives alone in a West Brunswick apartment and is financially independent.

Research on baby boomers like Hunter who have "friends with benefits" will be presented at the Let's Talk About Sex conference in Melbourne on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Conference speakers plan to challenge the assumptions and stereotypes about older people and sexual intimacy, in an event organised by Alzheimers Australia and the Council on the Ageing.

La Trobe University researcher Dr Linda Kirkman did her thesis on rural baby boomers in "friends with benefits" relationships.

Her interviewees had sexual relationships that were ongoing but didn't consider themselves in a couple or share finances, she said.

She found many desired sexual pleasure and intimacy but didn't want the ties, financial entanglements and commitments of the relationships - often marriages - in their younger life.

Some of the people she interviewed were hippies in their youth and influenced by books like Robert Heinlein's free-love classic Stranger in a Strange Land, while others regarded sex as frightening or taboo when young but hungered for a richer sex life as they aged.

"Several of the people I spoke to said they were having the best sex of their lives. As a young person they hadn't understood about mutual pleasure...but now there is greater social acceptance that sex can be something to be enjoyed," Dr Kirkman said.

Anne Hunter describes herself as "polyamorous", She defines polyamory as having multiple ethical relationships, with an emphasis on emotional connection, not just sex.

With Haydon she founded PolyVic in 1994, the first polyamorous network in Victoria.

And her long-term partnerships were like family, she said.

A couple of nights a week Haydon stays at her apartment, and sometimes his partner of 17 years comes too.

(Hunter and this woman do not have a sexual relationship, but share a close friendship. Hunter has a bedroom at their house on the coast).

"We support each other in all sorts of ways. When his other partner had a severe illness a few years ago I moved down to the coast for a couple of months and did cooking and cleaning," she said.

Because Hunter suffers from chronic fatigue her libido is low, hence sometimes cuddles and non-sexual intimacy are all she has energy for with her "intimates".

And the biggest pressure is finding the time to see everyone. "People think jealousy's the biggest problem, but if you ask poly people what their biggest concerns are they'd say time management and stigma from the outside world," she said.

A lot of polyamorous people worked part-time, and lived within close proximity to the people they saw often, she said.

But despite lobbying from PolyVic, the Australian Bureau of Statistics was yet to include a question about polyamory on the census, making it impossible to reveal how many people were "raising the level of love in the world", as Hunter put it.

6 Reasons You're Only A Hookup, And You'll NEVER Be His Girlfriend

"When your feeling start to change into wanting more from your relationship its

6 Reasons You're Only A Hookup, And You'll NEVER Be His Girlfriend

    Time to take responsibility, ladies!

You’ve been hanging out with this guy for weeks, maybe even months. You’re not sure how he feels and you haven’t had “the talk.” You think you’re ready for more — but he hasn’t brought it up. Maybe he’s even avoiding the topic completely.
In a culture where relationship lines are blurred and more people are hooking up than cuffin’ up, taking the leap from casual to commitment can seem complicated.
The thing is, if a man wants to be with you, he will do whatever it takes to have you. There are reasons you’ve remained a hookup and not his girlfriend — here they are:

    1. You enabled the hookup mentality.

He was passive in his approach, and you enabled his behaviour. Maybe you started out as friends, or met through mutual friends, which made you comfortable hooking up right away. Maybe you weren’t looking for more than a hookup at the time, anyway. Since your relationship didn’t start out on a course to commitment, there was never an expectation to commit. There’s never been the expectation for him to take you out or treat you as anything but a hookup, and so, there you stand.

    2. You never told him what you wanted.

You wanted to be the cool girl because you didn’t want to pressure him. You were just having fun, but then, you started feeling things. Even then, you didn’t say anything because you were afraid to do so. He can’t read your mind. Unless you clearly express how you feel and what you want, you’ll never get it and you’ll be stuck in a cycle of unfulfilled expectations.

    3. You didn’t make him a priority.

Hanging out and hooking up once a week or every now and then was okay with you. You were busy, he was busy, and neither of you wanted to put any pressure on the situation. You didn’t prioritise each other, and he needed more attention from you to figure out if you were worth settling down with. Now, he’s spending more time with the person who did prioritise him.
    Fish2FishDating.co.uk

    4. You ignore the signs that he’s emotionally unavailable.

He never slept over because he always had an early day at work the next day, or whatever other excuses he gave you. You never went on dates because he only communicated when he wanted to hook up. He didn’t share his days with you and you never got to know much about him. He only gave you enough to keep you holding on to hope. Those are the signs of the emotionally unavailable man and you missed them.

    5. You "gave him the milk for free."

We’ve all heard the saying, “Why buy the cow, when you get the milk for free?” This normally refers to sex, but there’s more to it. He’s getting all the benefits of being your boyfriend without having to commit. You’re cooking and cleaning for him. You’re supporting his dreams. You’re giving him your time and your heart. Why would he commit when he’s already getting all of the perks?

    6. He’s just not that into you.

We’re not all meant for each other. Maybe he’s just not that into you, but the sex is good so he keeps hooking up.
No matter the reason, if you’re looking for more, it’s time to talk about it. Get on the same page with the man who is getting your time, mind, and body. Don’t let fear, comfort, or selfishness keep you from getting what you ultimately need and deserve. No matter the outcome, you’ll live to love another day.

Is He Emotionally Unavailable Or Is He Just Not That Into You?

Being In Love With An EUM Isn't Easy But There Are Ways To Beat Him At His Own Game

Is He Emotionally Unavailable Or Is He Just Not That Into You?

Through my coaching practice, I have been seeing and helping so many women dealing with what they think as emotional unavailability in a man. In fact I just wrote an ebook dealing with this very pertinent issue: how to date emotionally unavailable guys and come out on top. I have been pleasantly surprised by the response so far. So many women come out of the woodwork and share with me their heartbreaking stories of dealing with guys who can't or won't commit or move the relationship to the next level. Or guys who can't even label the relationship! (And the good news some have already turned it around by practicing my Feminine Magnetism tools and principles).
Sounds familiar to you? Read on....
Falling For Mr. Unavailable? Follow These Rules
First of all, how do you know if he's really emotionally unavailable or if he's just a little guarded because he's not ready to plunge in both feet or, worse still, he's just emotionally unavailable to you or in other words he's just not that into you?
Here's Why He Lies About His Actual Feelings For You
Second, if he's not ready, will he be ready one day and when he's ready he will pick you as the one? Will you just waste time with such guys? Will you feel used or feel like a temporary filler until something better comes along and then and only then he will dump you?
Third, if he's truly emotionally unavailable, is there a cure to it and should you just accept it or move on to a greener pasture?
My advice is, first of all, don't freak out or give up just because he's not ready. Yet don't pine or over-invest either. There are ways to do it right and safe to your heart. This relationship will in fact heal you from your own unreadiness and/or emotional unavailability that you are not even aware of. This relationship will prepare you for the real deal with the real man who deserves you -either him or someone BETTER! When you are ready, the right man will find and claim you. That has been my experience.
    Let's explore each point separately.
    Is He Really Emotionally Unavailable?
How do you know if a guy is truly into you? Generally speaking, when a man is into a woman, it doesn't take much for her to feel that. He will show efforts, initiate, take you out, love to touch, hug, kiss and make out with you, make you feel special, call/text, compliment you, etc. If you have to ask then it's either he's giving you conflicting messages or he's not. But why would a man give conflicting messages? Here are some of the reasons:
He's Really That Into You, He's Just Not Ready
    1. He likes you but he's not looking for relationship for whatever reasons and he doesn't want to lead you on so he has to blow hot and cold (this is one of the reasons why men pull away).
    2. He likes you enough to want to explore things with you, yet he's discouraged or scared by your over enthusiasm or (perceived) clinginess so he needs to back off every now and then to dampen your eagerness.
    3. He's just playing the field and he's probably in a relationship of some kind with another woman already!
    4. He loves the sex and he really doesn't want anything more than a casual relationship in which sex is the center...in other words you are a just f*ckbuddy or a booty call....ouch!
    5. He just wants to be friend with benefits with you. He loves and values the friendship and the sex is great but he doesn't have the emotional capacity to make it more serious than that. Or simply, he's just not up for the obligations, expectations and responsibility of a relationship at this very moment.

    Fish2FishDating.co.uk

Will He Ever Be Ready And Pick Me When He Is?
Sometimes we are in a situation in which having a relationship is not our priority. It could be because that we have just recently been out of a long-term relationship ourselves or we are having enough on our plate. You don't think those aren't good enough excuses but they are!
After my the split from my husband of 4.5 years, it took about 4 years for me to feel really right about entering a new relationship with both feet. I've been analyzing my own unreadiness and this is for the same reason why many guys are scared of commitment: the fear of being stuck in a dysfunctional or mediocre relationship in which you will keep plowing since you have invested much in it knowing it won't make much difference in the end after all.
How To Seduce A Man With Your Feminine Mystique
If you have been burned before, whether you realize it or not you'll be much more careful next time because the heart does get scared to get stung again. It really is a natural reaction to most people.
And it's the mediocre relationship one has to be most afraid of, it is the one in which it's too good to leave, but too bad to stay. You are stuck in your comfort zone and potentially waste years of your life. And at my age (I'm in my 40's), I don't have any more year to waste on waiting a relationship to run its course, especially since I'm still not giving up hope for a family.
Another thing is the obligations, expectations and responsibility of a relationship aren't the ones to be taken lightly because when one's heart isn't fully in it, the potential for drama and hurting the other person -and ourselves in the process- is high and real.
So, unreadiness is real. It's not just an excuse. Don't blast him for not being ready at this very moment.
The Real Reasons Why He Disappeared On You
Back to the question: will he ever be ready and when he is will he pick you instead of another woman? The answer is yes and yes, both CAN happen as my client Mikaila has proven through applying my methods.

My ex wasn't ready when we first met. He displayed every sign of emotional unavailability in the book but he didn't want to lose me so he made us a couple 1.5 years after we met and married me a year later.
    So anything is possible.
    But what if he doesn't?
If you are a high-value woman, you won't worry about these things because:
    1. You won't invest more than he does.
    2. You won't make him a priority when you are only an option to him.
    3. You will still be dating around or accepting dates as long as he's not ready to commit or call you a girlfriend.
    4. You are so irresistibly secure that any man who has a chance to spend a good amount of time with you and find your company enjoyable will have a very hard time to let you go. He will at least respect you so much that he won't be so much less inclined to make a pastime out of you. You'll be the type of woman any man seeks for commitment because you understand men and their fears and validate them so they don't have to resist you in any way, shape or form.
Is There A Cure To Emotional Unavailabilty?
Falling For Mr. Unavailable? Here Is The Cure
Some people are truly emotionally unavailable. That means they can't be emotionally available to anyone, no matter how great he/she is. It might have been to do with childhood traumas or upbringing or there are some other psychological damages that cause them unable to connect with another person on a deeper level. This can be temporary or permanent.
If you have established that he is truly emotionally unavailable, it is up to you what to do. Can you accept him the way he is with the amount of intimacy and emotional expressions he's able to give you? Can you be contented with the little you have in terms of passion and affection? If not, it's time to move on to the greener pasture.
What Is A High-Value Woman And How To Become One So He Can't Resist Committing To You?
Am I Just Being Used For Sex?
The number one concern among women will be a relationship of convenience, i.e. a casual relationship in which she invests more than he does yet she feels she benefits less than he does, mainly because he has all the sex he wants and she gets very little in return in terms of security and commitment.
And to a woman security is everything, while to a man his freedom, independence and autonomy come first.
Let me tell you something, the more you are relaxed about sex, the more alluring you become. By that I'm not saying: be promiscuous or sleep with any man you date. And for sure relationship based on convenience does happen as I can personally attest but if you have faith in your own value as a woman that worry can be minimized.
For most guys, though sex is important they will rarely come back for more for an extended period of time (say more than a few encounters) unless they truly like you.
Why? It's just not worth it in the end since most know that nothing comes free in the end. The potential of drama and hurt feelings far surpass the benefits of having regular "easy" sex. And it's even more so if the woman constantly puts them on alert of the status of the relationship.
Most men understand there is virtually no NSA (no string attached) sex after a certain amount of time has passed. When she begins to show signs uf discomfort of the lack of clarity of the relationship, most men will quickly leave the scene unless they really like her. And if she has been somewhat a nag and yet he's still around, obviously he likes her more than just sex.
So while this notion isn't foolproof by any means, that should enable you to relax a bit about the notion of "being used" which is a phrase that only women with lack of self-esteem and self-confidence will use. A high-value woman feels secure and confident about her desirability simply on the virtue of that she has faith in herself, if nothing else.
How To Use Texting To Inspire Him To Romance You Again Like The First Time You Met
My book explains in detail what you can do to avoid relationship of convenience that will waste years of your (reproductive) life but in a nutshell:
    1. As a woman, you should lean back which means you let him lead and put in efforts/invest in the relationship. When a woman rows the boat, she is creating a fertile ground for convenience relationship to flourish because many guys will gladly enjoy the ride when they don't have to extend any effort.
    2. Mirror him. When he comes to you, you come to him. When he pulls away, you pull back too, even further sometimes.
    3. Don't give/invest more than he does. The more you give or do things for him, the more you are invested in him and the relationship. Give him a chance to reciprocate and step up his game by leaning back. It doesn't mean you give to expect something in return. It means if he doesn't reciprocate you can at least judge his level of interest toward you. Men who are into a woman will do at least something from time to time to make her happy.
    4. Don't stop dating others. The more focused you are toward one guy -with whom you have regular sex- the more you will be hormonally and emotionally hooked on him, the more vulnerable you become. I'm not saying you should have sex with every guy you date, but keeping your options open and your schedule full with social activities and other interested men will keep you grounded and sane throughout.

Make A Commitment Already! 9 Tips That Help Love Feel Less Scary

Hey scaredy-cat, are you afraid of real love?

The season is here for haunted houses, jack o' lanterns, kids going trick-or-treating, and things that go bump in the night. It can be fun and empowering to toy with the idea of what scares us (dressing up in costumes, watching scary movies, and telling ghost stories) but if you really want to prove you’re bold and brave, I challenge you to also take a look at those aspects of committed relationships that send scary chills up your spine!

Facing Frankenstein in one thing. Facing your fear of getting hurt again, or of losing your freedom, is another kind of monster to face entirely.

As a relationship expert, I know that, most often, the thing that stops a potentially fantastic relationship from finding it’s way … is fear. Fear is a powerful emotion; one that blinds you to truth, makes you freak out in conflict, and otherwise triggers you to fight or flee anytime things get even a little bit uncomfortable. That pesky Boogie-Man, named Fear, if not faced head on, will ruin a great relationship every time, killing your chances of finding (and sustaining) that happy, healthy, and deeply fulfilling love you desire.

So this spooky season, while you’re out there investigating dark corners, take some time to look inward and search out out the places where fear might be lurking in dark corners in your own heart. It’s time to stare down all that spooks you so that you can finally embrace a “real relationship” rather than running and hiding from it.

Here are some not-so-scary tips to help you get over your fear of love and commitment:

    1. Accept Your "Warts" (And Your Partner's)Nobody is perfect and it is really hard to truly give love to someone else when you don't feel accepting and loving toward yourself. Everyone has flaws so show yourself a little mercy already. Start to practice self-acceptance within yourself and then turn that loving energy outward toward others.

    2. Take Off Your Mask: So many people are afraid to be who they really are. But for love to work, you must be your true self. If someone doesn't like who you are, then they aren't the right partner for you. But how will you know if that special someone truly chooses you if you never reveal your honest, authentic self? Sure, it feels safer hiding behind masks, but once they finally come off, you'll have the confidence of knowing afterward that you are loved for you—not a false image you've created.

    3. Come Out Of The Shadows: Though most of us want emotional intimacy, it's also scary being vulnerable. We're afraid of getting hurt and so we hide. However, most people find vulnerability very attractive in another person because only when you are open about your thoughts and feelings can you and your partner achieve true emotional connection.

    4. Don't Be A Ghost: In order for a relationship to thrive, you have to spend real time together. In the beginning of your partnership, you happily invested that time, now—not so much. It's important that you still prioritise your relationship, as this lets your partner know that he or she matters. And, hello, just because you're physically there doesn't mean you're actually "there" (hint: put the smartphone down and pay attention to each other).

    5. Give Lots Of Treats, Not Tricks: Your partner wants to feel respected and appreciated. So skip the head games and the nasty behaviour. Love needs positive energy, trust, and caring to thrive.

    6. Beware Of Monsters In The Closet: We all have baggage from the past. And these can easily get triggered in our present day relationships. If something your partner does activates old hurt, pause and be brave enough to look at the real issue rather than making your mate the target of your upset.

    7. Clean Away The Cobwebs: Just like no individual is perfect, no partnership is either.  Somewhere along the line, there will be hurt, disappointment, etc. Don't let resentment or unresolved feelings collect in the corners of your relationship. Check in with one another and discuss any issues that still feel unresolved. Seek to understand where miscommunication or conflict has taken place. Now is the time to sweep that stuff out and let it go.

    8. Seek New Thrills And Chills: Save your relationship from falling victim to the same old stale routine. Part of the fun of the season is engaging in pretend and role-play. Don't be afraid to mix things up by doing something a little different and daring. Bringing a little novelty into your relationship (and the bedroom) keeps the electricity between you sparking. So give your romance a playful jolt once in awhile.

    9. R.I.P.: You can't give your best to your current relationship if you're still clinging to old ones. It's time to let old relationships go—in thought, in day-to-day life, and on social media. There's nothing more stomach-turning or scary to a new partner than constantly being compared to an old fling. Remember: you're alive and those old relationships are dead—let them rest in peace.
